346 Personal Content Experience: Managing Digital Life in the Mobile Age GOOD OLD LIFE Dave was not in his best mood. Fixing pipes never was a clean job, but this was getting bad. This fountain in Piccadilly Circus was simply fi lthy. Nice Eros statue on top, but the bottom of the fountain had not apparently been properly cleaned in years, and the standing water, bird manure, and leftover hamburgers from tourists had developed into a hideous slime that would probably kill anything that touched it. And he had to fi x the piping there, with all those tourists watching and making fun at him. He should really work on his new betting site to be able to retire soon. Need to talk to Eddie, but he was a busy kid these days. Those pipes were really old, probably from the 19th century. How old was the memorial anyway? 1880? Dave remembered reading about the Eros statue in an article about Piccadilly Circus. His granddaughter had prepared a history essay for her school, and he had helped her to fi nd material. Much of the history was still on paper, which felt natural for Dave. His granddaughter was more at home on the Internet. Dave showed her how it was possible to actually go and browse a paper-based index (the kid had waved her little head in disbelief) and retrieve, old, worn, physical paper copies of paper-based magazines in a library. Dave replaced the regulator valve and secured the joints. Now there. That should do it. Tomorrow they could actually test for more leaks. Could call it a day now. He got his gear, stepped out of the fountain, waved goodbye to the tourists and got a small applause that was practically drowned by the noise from traffi c and tourists. The winged Eros statue on the top of the fountain was truly beautiful. At a moments thought, Dave got his cellphone and took a picture of the statue. Would be nice to show Esther how he was doing a worthy deed, restoring the landmark to its former glory.
