Chapter 7: Application Outlook 303 daily page view counts reportedly surpassing even Google. Every reg- istered user of the site has a profi le – a personalized page with multiple elements and functions, including personal data, guestbooks, messag- ing, links to other users’ pages, rating, pictures, videos, music, anima- tions, and so forth. The pages are highly customizable and typically rich in multimedia elements. The key functions of the site are adding links to other user’s pages, commenting on their pages, and customizing personal pages. The social networks on the site evolve through these functions, and can become dynamic with additions of new people and deletions of others. Besides individual users, a multitude of non-personal pages have been created for musicians, bands, products, even for software packages. The primary motivation for MySpace use seems to be participation in juvenile “hanging out” with peers (Boyd 2006). The site also serves as a channel for self-expression, as people often customize their pages with extensive numbers of personal elements, such as pictures, memo- ries, confessions, and even their biographies. Moreover, a typical profi le displays lists of personal preferences, with the likes of “My fave food,” “The worst place ever”, “Best music”, and so on. Much of the discus- sion on the site consists of commenting on the contents of the profi les. Is MySpace personal content? Undoubtedly, yes. A MySpace page is the projection of self into a public image. This image is then used as a tool for interaction with other people. The image in this sense consists of publicly visible items that are of particular importance among youth – appearance, preferences, media, links, and friends. Even though some the contents of the page are borrowed from elsewhere, they are also personal in the sense that they (supposedly) talk about the owner of that page. 7.3.4 YouTube 20 The YouTube web site allows people to share their own videos.
