276 Personal Content Experience: Managing Digital Life in the Mobile Age PictBridge standard allows printing an image directly from an imaging device. Nevertheless, metadata may be used for transferring the per- sonal settings and preferences, as well as technical information related to printing. 6.5.6 Multi-Tasking in GEMS The previous sections illustrated what is related to single tasks and some of the requirements they pose on the user interface. In real life the tasks seldom appear isolated from each other. Instead they form a fl ow where the user performs several tasks that belong to different phases of GEMS. For example, capturing an image, removing red eyes, and sending it instantaneously concerns the Get, Enjoy, and Share phases. In addition, there may be multiple tasks ongoing at the same time; in this case, each of them belongs to a separate task fl ow. The follow- ing example illustrates this: A REMARK YOU MADE It’s a City day again for Cathy. The train ride from Belleville to London is generally not very interesting, and it’s pouring with rain (as usual), so not a lot to see outside the train. The friendly old fellow opposite her seems as if wishing to chat, but she would like to be on her own today. Cathy puts on her earphones and listens to the Weather Report songs that Steve loaded into her phone. Cathy did not know how to use the player, but Steve insisted to “get her to the 21st century” and showed her how to access the MP3 player on her phone. Good; now she has a use for that function. Some time for herself. Except that the bloody phone is ringing. Who dares to disturb that Zawinal solo? Cathy takes the phone from her purse and accepts the call. The music stops. It’s Deena – she has lost her phone and would need to check tomorrow’s appointment with the curator. Deena had sent a copy of the calendar event to Cathy and now asks her to check the time. Cathy is bewildered by this task. She does not use the calendar, preferring her scribbled notes, but Deena keeps sending her those electronic appointments. Well, she could try, but how do you get to the calendar when there’s a call on? Steve, help! Cathy explains her problem to Deena, feeling lost. That old chap next to her appears to be listening, and fi nally raises his hand as if wishing to join the conver- sation. Cathy is a little annoyed at fi rst, but that quickly turns to relief after the man explains how she can access all phone functions with that Menu button, even while speaking on the phone. That works! Cathy goes to the calendar and, after some fumbling, informs Deena that her meeting will be at 11:00 am.
