Chapter 2: Trends Towards Mobility 21 Because Swiss army knives provide a wider range of features than dedicated devices, the UI often contains more physical controls, and possibly larger and better displays. One typical usability limitation is the lack of multitasking, that is, the device can only be used for one function at the time. In contrast, some toolbox devices allow users to switch between several concurrent applications (see below). From the personal content perspective, the devices typically provide more computing power and storage space, and better wireless and/or cable connectivity. Some devices have embedded cameras, and a pos- sibility for audio recording. Typical Swiss army knives provide limited possibilities for third-party application development; for instance, the Java platform restricts the application environment to gain enhanced security. 2.2.2.1 E-mail Clients 9 E-mail clients, such as the Blackberry, are intended primarily for a single task: to handle mobile e-mail. The design is optimized towards this task, which seems to attract large numbers of buyers. The same functions can be carried out with many phones and PDAs, but there is defi nitely something to be said for single-purpose gadgets. 2.2.2.2 Game Consoles Handheld game consoles are starting to feature multimedia functions besides games (which are indeed rich multimedia experiences in their own right). The Sony PSP, discussed above, plays movies and music, and can be used to browse the Web upon WLAN coverage. Again, the usability has been optimized towards mobile gaming, but the devices can still be practical for content viewing. Game gadgets have traditionally relied on memory cards as the main means of fi le transfer, but more devices now include wireless connectivity. 2.2.3 Toolbox Devices The third category – toolbox – is the next step up the mobile content evolution ladder. Devices in this category are rarely media-only devices, but instead are sometimes referred to as “multimedia computers”, with media features as well as many other equally important features (voice communication, messaging, time management). This implies that depending on the designated core tasks and thus the design of the 10 device, its primary function may vary.
