When I was bankrupt and upside down in 1973–74, I had fortuitously sold my way through college and was given a prize of an audio recording by the dean of speakers, Cavett Robert. When I got it I was to soph- omoric to drink in its vital and life changing wisdom. After being devastated by my bankruptcy, I listened to that one audio, Are You 吀栀e Cause Or Are You 吀栀e E昀昀ect, 287 times, making a check mark on the cassette every time I completed listening to it entirely. Courageously and innocently, I wrote this speaking giant and told him that when he arrived in New York, New Jersey, Connecti- cut, or Massachusetts, I would happily retrieve him and take him to his destination. Amazingly, he wrote back and told me when and where to pick him up. I was broke, not poor, and I had a dilapidated Volk- swagen. I retrieved Cavett and asked him everything I could think of about writing and speaking. He was beyond kind, gracious, insightful, and encouraging to me. I learned the profession of speaking and selling suc- cessfully from the platform thanks exclusively to Cavett, who also mentored Zig Ziglar and thousands of profes- sional speakers.
