ALOHA UNITED WAY From the President he Spirit of Community Awards Celebration has taken place annually for years. I’ve never had the opportunity to attend as AUW’s President & CEO because we haven’t had a SOCA event while I’ve been here during the two- plus years since this pandemic started… and a lot has happened. I joined TAUW in June, 2020, and the pandemic was already in full-swing. Our state and our country literally stopped. Tourism in Hawaii came to a screeching halt. As the months passed, situations on many fronts became increasingly desperate. Like so many of you, I wanted to help, to jump in and do whatever I could to keep things moving for our community. When I started at AUW, it broke my heart to hear detailed stories from our 211 specialists who were taking calls at all hours of the day and night from our neighbors and friends who had nowhere else to turn. AUW worked with numerous nonprofit and government partners to help keep people in their homes. We worked to provide food, utility assistance, COVID help, and educational resources. As a community, we pivoted so many times, we were doing pirouettes! Unprecedented times... We asked for your help and you did what you have always done- you helped! You Zoomed, baked, talked, walked, adopted, adapted, taught, laughed, cried, inspired, and you gave. Many local workplaces had a champion or champions who organized, learned new technology, and jumped at the chance to help. We had your support in empty classrooms, in full hospitals, on electricity lines and in restaurant kitchens. You are community heroes who gave even when your own needs undoubtedly increased. You gave when it wasn’t easy, because it was the right thing to do. I am honored and humbled to congratulate you - the Giving Class of 2020-2021. The Spirit of Community Awards may not have taken place in-person lately, but your contributions were needed and mattered, and your actions will live forever. And so, I am proud to honor you. ABOUT THE AWARDS The Spirit of Community Awards he Spirit of Community Awards have been an annual tradition for some time. The Awards celebrate the workplaces and individuals who fuel change in our community. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our community experienced Tunprecedented levels of hardship and disruption. We were unable to hold the Spirit of Community Awards in 2020 and 2021. This did not mean that our community went without champions. The awards that you’ll see listed in these pages recognize the effort put forth to innovate, inspire, and answer the calls for help when our people needed it most. LŌKAHI AWARD Award recognizing the value of employee teamwork. A company can achieve more—through increased employee participation in a workplace campaign. Award winners increased participation by 10% or more. HO‘OKELA AWARD SOCA’s highest honor, this award is used to recognize a local company for their overall achievement and dogged pursuit of excellence. The winner not only increased overall participation, but exceeded fundraising goals during their campaign through careful planning and communication.
