Dear Students, Parents, Learning Coaches, & Families, Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! We are so excited to be on this Journey of Learning with you! Each student has been assigned an Independent Study Teacher who will serve as your guide and support throughout the year. Our credentialed teachers will be supporting you with curriculum selection, lesson planning, work assignments, assessments, and more. You will meet with your teacher every Learning Period to review the body of work for the previous Learning Period, have work assigned for the next Learning Period, facilitate assessments, and provide information on learning opportunities and school updates. If you need any support in between meetings, your teacher will also be reaching out on a weekly basis to make sure you are well supported. Communication is critical at our school, so please keep a lookout for emails (check your spam on a regular basis) and always return calls from your teacher so we can ensure your student is progressing. Thank you again for choosing us to be on this journey with you as your school. Our mission is to ensure our students are academically successful, and we know that means we need to be strong partners with you. As always, we are here for you, so please reach out anytime. s e CVCS l a g r a r STUDENT’S BODY OF WORK E STUDENT’S BODY OF WORK e i S TK-6th Grade AA Body of Work Review will be done every learning period to gather valuable data on grade level progress as it relates to the state standards. Determining the student's progress will center around the Educational Plan (Standards). The school will be able to utilize this information to report the effectiveness of our academic program to stakeholders, like WASC, authorizers, and our School Board. Each Learning Period, your teacher will assign specific lessons, assignments, and activities your student will complete for the Learning Period. At your monthly Learning Period meetings, families will have the opportunity to share all the exciting learning that occurred during the month. Teachers will diligently review the assignments and activities completed by your child to ensure they are actively engaged in learning and making strides towards mastering educational standards. This review process allows us to match your child's achievements to their personalized Educational Plan and reflect on the student’s progress and growth. By reviewing these together, we gain valuable insight into your child's learning journey and can assess their mastery of educational standards. The review of the body of work and information shared by your child and you during Learning Period meetings is instrumental as your Teacher determines if your child is receiving the necessary support and resources to thrive academically. Mastery can be verified through a combination of the following: Standards Mastery Star 360 Monthly meetings: Work Samples (1 per subject should be reviewed), Photos, Conversations/Discussions, etc. Unit Reviews; Unit Assessments Written Evaluations; Oral Evaluations or Presentations Thematic projects Online program course evaluations (i.e. Time for Learning, etc.) Quizzes Math and Reading Diagnostic Assessments If you have any questions or need support, please contact your teacher

Curriculum FAQ Curriculum FAQ Developing a rigorous and engaging curriculum is a critical aspect of K-6 education. A well-designed curriculum sets the stage for meaningful learning experiences, fosters student growth, and prepares them for future challenges. 1.How do I pick a curriculum? Before selecting a curriculum, please take some time to reflect on the following questions and work with your teacher to select the curriculum that is the right fit for your student. What will your learning day/week look like? Who will be providing the instruction to the student? Do you need a daily lesson plan and a weekly pacing guide? Does the student want online or paper? Does your student do better in a live class or does your student do better in a self-paced class? What type of learner is your student? Kinesthetic, Auditory, or Visual? Which subject does your student need more help and might benefit from teacher-led instruction? “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” - Brian Herbert

Curriculum FAQ... Continued Curriculum FAQ... Continued 2. What aspects make a strong curriculum? Aligned to State Standards: The curriculum should be aligned with CA educational standards. This ensures that students are learning the essential content and skills required for their grade level or course. Clearly defined and measurable learning objectives: These objectives help both educators and students understand the intended outcomes of the curriculum. Objectives should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Sequencing and Progression: Content should be organized in a logical sequence, building on previous knowledge and skills. A strong curriculum ensures a progression of difficulty and complexity, allowing students to gradually advance their understanding and abilities. Engaging Instructional Strategies: The curriculum should suggest or incorporate a variety of research-based instructional strategies that cater to different learning styles. This includes hands-on activities, group work, technology integration, and other methods that keep students engaged and active in their learning. Robust Learning Activities: A curriculum that connects learning to real-world scenarios and applications makes the content more meaningful and engaging for students. It helps them see the practical implications of what they are learning while also giving opportunities to practice important skills and demonstrate the mastery of standards and concepts learned. Assessment and Feedback: Assessment tools should be aligned with learning objectives, providing educators with a way to measure student progress. The curriculum should also include mechanisms for giving constructive feedback to help students understand their strengths and areas for improvement. 3. My Educational Philosophy is different than a traditional public school? Can I still school with your charter? Absolutely! Regardless of educational philosophies, we can support you and your student to grow and love learning. By partnering together, we can set goals, monitor student learning and progress, and focus on mastering the California State Standards. Your teacher will use their experience and training along with our school’s curricular and instructional resources to create a standard-based curriculum plan that will ensure your student learns and masters the skills needed to be successful in today’s ever-changing world. 4. What curriculum choices do you recommend and why? There are several curriculum options that are our curriculum department’s favorites. When implemented with fidelity, these curricula are comprehensive in nature and provide a robust and meaningful experience so learners can progress and master grade-level standards. The curriculum incorporates a variety of pedagogically sound practices while also providing students with meaningful learning experiences that develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Curriculum Recommendations

Curriculum FAQ... Continued Curriculum FAQ... Continued 5. What do I do if I select a curriculum and I do not like it? Can I switch? YES! If a curriculum isn’t working for your student, it is important that we determine why the curriculum isn’t working and look for a new curriculum that is a better fit for your student. However, this change must be done in consultation with your teacher. Students changing curriculum will continue with their curriculum until the new curriculum arrives or a new curriculum plan is put in place by the teacher, generally at the start of a new Learning Period. 6. How can I learn more about the various curricula on your short list? During the months of April through August, our Curriculum and Instruction Team will be hosting weekly office hours that are available to parents and teachers. We encourage parents and teachers to come together during these office hours to learn about our recommendations and ask questions in real-time. Additionally, parents can attend weekly office hours with our Curriculum and Instruction leaders or stop by the Looking Library, located in the Lending Library, to view curriculum options. C&I Office Hours 7. Is a pacing guide required since my student likes to go at her/his own pace? While a learning plan is always dynamic in order to meet the needs of the learner, it is important students have a weekly learning schedule that provides daily learning opportunities on standards and skills for each student. Students should be making steady progress through the curriculum and standards in order to master the grade-level standards by the end of the school year. This will require adjustments to a student's learning plan should a student need more support on a particular subject. Your teacher will be able to help create adjustments to the schedule, however, daily consistent work must still be completed to ensure student growth occurs. “Independent learning encourages children to take responsibility for their own learning and become self-directed learners.” - Sir Ken Robinson

s e CVCS l a g r a r SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES E SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES e i S TK-6th Grade Students in grades TK-6 will continue to be able to study standards outside of their grade-level standards in the area of Science and Social Studies. However, to serve our students well we will be slightly changing the requirements to ensure all our students are meeting grade-level expectations. Our goal is to partner with you to provide students with an educational plan that ensures they are working on grade-level standards within these subject areas while also allowing students the flexibility and autonomy to study a variety of educational topics that they are interested in learning. Beginning for the 2024-2025 school year, we will use grade-level course outlines for any student who is not using a complete curriculum for Science and Social Studies. This will primarily apply to students who choose to complete science and social studies using the Expedition Pathway and/or are participating in co-ops or completing unit studies. Students will be able to pick a new topic to study each Learning Period and then select from a menu of learning activities to complete to demonstrate depth of knowledge on the topic. These learning activities will represent the body of work that is to be reviewed by your teacher each Learning Period. These grade-level course outlines will ensure students are engaging in robust, grade-level appropriate learning while also providing them with an avenue to explore and study areas of interest. We believe that by maintaining a high standard of academic excellence for our students and allowing them the ability to pursue areas that interest them they will have meaningful learning experiences that will increase student achievement and grow them into independent learners. FOCUSING ON INDIVIDUALIZATION & ENGAGEMENT As we lead students on their educational journey, our charter school offers several paths to ensure the individual learning needs of each student are met. These four different paths provide different levels of support while requiring different levels of accountability and record-keeping from the Learning Coach/parent/guardian to ensure all the learning needs of the student are met. The curricular pathway options are listed in order from the most structured options requiring the least planning and record keeping to the most teacher- supported option requiring the most record keeping, documentation, and communication with your Teacher. You can learn more about each curriculum by reviewing our recommended short list of curricula HERE. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out to your assigned Teacher, and they will be happy to assist you in selecting a curriculum that is a good fit for your student. Happy Trails! This path requires the most daily and monthly planning time. A monthly plan will need to be created in advance, daily logs/records kept, and more evidence of work submitted at the end of each Learning Period (LP). Choosing this learning path means choosing to work on grade-level standards through assorted means rather than working through a particular curriculum. The curricula listed in this category are not comprehensive curricula and are primarily considered supplemental or enrichment. While these supplements and learning activities can be incorporated into a student’s individualized Learning Plan, they do require a great deal of oversight from the Teacher and Learning Coach to ensure grade-level standards are being met. If you choose to work on individual standards as your child’s curriculum plan, you will work with the Teacher to create a plan for each Learning Period that identifies the learning activities being used to meet the assigned standards. To best support families who select this path, the Teacher will assign a set of standards to complete using our school Ed Plans for each LP. The Teacher will then work with the Learning Coach to plan out the learning activities that will be completed during the LP. These activities may include some of the supplemental learning materials or enrichment activities on this document but are not subject to only those listed below. The Learning Coach will then support the student in mastering the standards by completing the assigned learning activities and turning in the completed work, activities logs, and evidence of learning to the Teacher for each Learning Period. If the parent would like, they can create a plan to review with their Teacher before each Learning Period meeting. While not required, using a template to create their own plan to review with the Teacher is recommended for families who choose this unique and rare learning path. The use of a template such as this one HERE may be helpful. The Teacher will then work with the parent to solidify the Learning Plan for the student by assigning the standards to be completed along with the learning activities, assignments, and experiences the parent has chosen to support the completion of those standards.
