UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SPEAKER Mimi Pinyan is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in forest management. She is from Greensboro, North Carolina. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Mimi has been an active member of the Society of American Foresters Student Chapter and the University Honors Program. She has consistently demonstrated academic excellence, earning the R.B. and Irene Jordan Endowed Scholarship, the J. M. and Sally B. Beard Forestry Endowed Scholarship, the Eldon M. and Leola P. Estep Natural Resources Endowed Scholarship Award, the Forest Education and Conservation Foundation Scholarship Award, and the Nicholas M. Curtis Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Fueled by her interest in forest biometrics and statistics, Mimi participated in multiple research projects in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources. She not only expanded her knowledge by taking additional statistics courses and researching the integration of the two 昀椀elds, but she also gained practical experience in data management while working for the NC State Tree Improvement Cooperative. After graduation, Mimi will pursue a master’s degree in forestry and statistics at the University of Georgia and serve as a graduate research assistant to Steven Kinane. Her research will focus on optimizing growth and yield models using computer programming for timber sales. Mimi looks forward to continuing her academic journey and hopes to eventually return to NC State as a professor.
GRADUATE STUDENT SPEAKER Wizaso Munthali is graduating with a doctoral degree in forestry and environmental resources. She has worked as an environmental expert in her home country of Zambia for nearly 22 years. From 2001 to 2012, Wizaso served as an environmental regulator with the Zambia Environmental Management Agency. She specialized in environmental impact assessment and pollution control. Wizaso holds a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Copperbelt University in Zambia and a master’s degree in geo-information science and earth observation from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She is a 2009 Aspen Environmental Forum Scholar, Fulbright Scholar, and a recipient of a Netherlands Fellowship Programme scholarship from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Wizaso currently works as a lecturer at the School of Mines and Mineral Sciences in the Environmental Engineering Department at Copperbelt University. Her research interests include energy transition, alternative cooking energy and life cycle analysis. Through the Energy Poverty PIRE in Southern Africa program funded by the National Science Foundation, Wizaso participated as an af昀椀liate in the planning, design and administration of household energy surveys and the development of research concepts covering the energy poverty theme in Zambia.

GRADUATION WITH LATIN HONORS Undergraduates are recognized for the level of distinction with which an academic degree has been earned via both the color of their sash at graduation and a degree honor designations noted on transcripts and diplomas. Cum Laude – White sash, GPA of 3.25 - 3.499 Magna Cum Laude – Silver sash, GPA of 3.5 - 3.749 Summa Cum Laude – Gold sash, GPA of 3.75 and above To be eligible for degree honor designations, students must have completed at least two semesters and at least 30 credit hours at NC State. A NOTE ABOUT ACADEMIC REGALIA In 1894, American universities standardized gown styles for bachelor, master and doctoral degree candidates. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree candidates wear traditional black gowns with full, rounded sleeves with three velvet bars. The hood is lined with the academic color of the university (red) and royal blue on the outside representing the color of philosophy. Master degree candidates also wear traditional black gowns with full-length sleeves that have a crescent shape at the end. The hood is lined with the academic color of the university (red) and orange, representing the color of engineering, or gold, representing the color of science, on the outside. Bachelor degree candidates wear a plain gown the academic color of the university (red) and no hood. Cords, stoles and sashes represent various academic achievements, honors or other recognitions held by the degree candidate. Faculty generally wear robes in the traditional black or the color of the academic institution where they received their post-graduate degree. The color on the velvet edge of the hood represents their speci昀椀c degree or discipline. The inner satin hood lining represents the academic institution where they received their highest ranking degree. International faculty also wear traditional regalia from their universities, which often varies in style from regalia worn by graduates in the United States.
