The idea of disenchantment is taken from the work of Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor and, before him, German sociologist Max Weber. Both argued that the modern world, with its over-emphasis on the empirical (If something can’t be measured, it does not exist.) has turned nature into a “purposeless mechanism.” By extension, that viewpoint has managed to strip humanity of purpose.
