Tan’s early investment in Coinbase paid off last year when the crypto exchange went public with a market capitalization of $85.8 billion. This year, General Motors pumped billions more into Cruise, the electric-vehicle startup that Initialized wrote one of the first checks to. Tan says he looks for founders who are excellent at building and attracting talent. “A founder who is a great builder tends to be a magnet, attracting the smartest people,” he said. “Every startup that can be a billion-dollar company is actually a Schelling point for talent.” With its sixth fund announced in December, the firm said it would no longer limit itself to seed investments and would write checks for Series A and follow-on capital.
