PRESENTATIONS 50. Demonstrate Physically Rather than just talk about an idea, think like a science teacher and do a physical demonstration. One well-known example of this is Steven Covey’s Big 1 Rocks Demonstration. Covey invites an audience member on stage, where they are presented with a jar, rocks of various sizes, and a bowl of pebbles. He puts the pebbles into the jar and then asks the audience member to get the remaining rocks in. With all of the pebbles taking up space, the audience member is unable to fit in all of the other rocks. He allows the person to try again, this time placing the big rocks in first and, no surprise, they all fit (with a little room left over for the pebbles). The point? If you don’t schedule your most important activities (Big Rocks) first, all of the less important things (Pebbles) will prevent you from getting to them. 1 Words don’t do it justice.
