We surpassed the goal across our global operations ahead of schedule by making a range of improvements in our operations, equipment and energy efficiency. In 2019, we accelerated our commitment to transitioning to the low-carbon economy by committing to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, as well as decrease absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 16% over the same target period (using a 2019 baseline). These targets were officially validated by SBTi in 2020. Absolute Scope 1 and 2 market-based emissions in 2021 have decreased 4% from 2020 and 11% from 2019. Based on current progress, we fully expect to achieve, and exceed, our Scope 1 and 2 Science Based Targets. Scope 3 emissions have increased 13% from 2019 to 2021. We attribute this to several factors, including a 12% increase in Metric Tons of aluminum purchased during the reporting period to meet increased demand for beverage cans globally.
