Foreword This trend report builds on the insights from the Smart City & Living 2016 acceler- ator program. In addition, it includes Startupbootcamp’s experiences in accelerat- ing innovative startups and PwC’s experiences in helping clients with transforma- tive change around the world. Based on these findings we have captured the essential trends that are shaping our cities and living conditions of tomorrow. Let us take action based on these insights to create innovative solutions which enable cities, organizations, and homes to become more intelligent, interconnected and efficient. State of Technology We are currently living in a new golden age, one that is driven by rapid technologi- cal change. Emerging technology has the transformative power to disrupt entire industries and touch every angle of life. These changes have fuelled the need to better anticipate disruption. In order to grow and thrive, organizations faced with disruption are seeking for external innovation to better anticipate the future. In parallel, the role that technology plays as an engine for growth has taken center stage in recent years for smart cities & living around the globe. Amid these rapid changes, organizations and governments must evaluate the most effective ways to create value, rather than trying to guess which disruptors are going to be the next big start-up. A perfect storm of conditions is brewing that makes corporate-startup collabo- ration a viable solution for the changes that are ahead. During the past months, we have accelerated 10 startups who are playing a disrup- tive role across the spectrum of smart city & living. Emerging Trends for Smart City & Living 2016 Today, cities around the world are seen as the engines for sustainable economic growth. And more than ever before the growth that cities can achieve is strongly linked to their power to tackle economic, social and environmental issues in a holistic manner, whilst making the most of emerging technology. Contemporary cities and homes are looking increasingly for smart, flexible solu- tions to save energy, improve livability and boost a sustainable urban economy. Technology can play a major role in the evolution toward such smarter environments. This includes smart homes and buildings, smart grids, smart retail, smart security, smart education, smart healthcare, and smart mobility. In a nutshell, cities and our lives are becoming smarter. This is also evident in the growth of the market, which was valued at US$575.01 billion in 2014 and is expected to reach US$1,240.00 billion by 2019, growing at a CAGR of 16.6 percent (Gartner, 2015). In light of these developments, the current Startupbootcamp accelerator is cen- tered around Smart City & Living. To enable organizations, startups, and governments to join forces for fuelling disruptive innovation within this space.. The startups within the program have created innovative solutions to enable cities, organizations, and homes to become more intelligent, interconnected, and efficient. A combined effort of all players within the ecosystem will facilitate the further development of smarter cities and homes, globally 2

Simulated Reality The power of augmented and virtual reality includes immersing users in curated surroundings, replicating cities and living environments. In addition, it overlays contextual information into the physical environment of the user. This has fueled organizations to fast-track AR and VR plans to transform businesses, cities, and homes. AR and VR are built to enable users to focus on an immersive experience rather than technology. Hence, this trends hold enormous value for organizations to communicate, interact and collaborate with their users. These technologies are still in early-stages of development, but rapidly advancing. Forward-thinking organizations should begin exploring and exploiting the advantage of these tools. theConstruct’s vision is to provide a simple and effective way to automatically virtualize 3D Models regardless of the format. theConstruct employs cutting edge technology and patentable software which has been co-developed with the University of Gdansk (Polytechnica). Smart Home & Living Smart homes & living makes the lives of inhabitants easier, more comfortable and efficient, with minimal impact on the environment. Smart homes use tools such as control systems and energy management systems. These technologies facilitate users and service providers to better track, control, and reduce their use of resources and demand for other services. Twingz looks into Smart Energy Management as a Service. This includes intelligent monitoring, control and optimization of energy consumption in house holds and companies. Twingz smart energy can be seen as the fitness tracker for your electrical & heat household or SMB. It enables its users to save 25-40% of energy cost and provides peace of mind. Country: Austria Team: 12 De Vinderij brings people together; students who are looking for the ideal side job and people for companies who want to outsource (home) tasks. At the core de Vinderij is a network platform that matches students and helps people from all generations; as babysitters, housecleaners, and elderly-care. Country: The Netherlands Team: 5 5

Smart Travel & Mobility Smarter travel and mobility aims at optimizing services through modernization of the current transportation infrastructure. Thus, achieving the goals of enhanced mobility at optimum cost, improved safety, low emission levels, reduced fuel consumption, and economic competitiveness in the city’s transport networks. New solutions enable connecting transport systems, passengers, and resources in real-time to enable efficient, convenient, and low-carbon movement within cities. It includes a variety of hardware and software solutions that can be incorporated into transportation infrastructure and in vehicles as well. Within our accelerator, we have witnessed several of such solution. Canard allows fast calibration of NavAids by using fully automated, unmanned UAVs (drones) that perform 100% accurate flight inspections, and support. Canard provides unmanned flight inspection. By utilizing drone-technology, Canard is able to ensure faster and/or simultaneous calibrations to stream- line the otherwise complex procedure. Additionally, there is zero emission, zero noise, and a reduction of 95% for the calibration budget. Country: Spain Team: 4 6

Cabture wants to gain value from the term ‘travel experience’ because lost time is never found again. Cabture has experts in taxi media and have strate- gic collaborations with advertisers, municipalities, and taxi-organizations. Cabture is an innovative Out of Home operator spe- cialized in the taxi industry. They are the leader in premium taxi advertisement and are specialized in reaching valuable target audiences for advertisers. They change the travel experience by adding multi- ple media solutions to the average taxi service. Country: The Netherlands Team: 6 PARKEAGLE makes parking fast, fun, and funda- mentally digital. Leveraging the best of new technol- ogies, PARKEAGLE powers the best of smart parking solutions available in the world today! PARKEAGLE solves the burden of high parking loads. Finding a on-street parking space in urban areas can take a long time. This causes frustration, economic damages, and harmful pollution. PARKEAGLE provides parking availability inform- ation and guidance in highly crowded urban. Country: The Netherlands Team: 4 Quicargo is an online marketplace for shippers & carriers to benefit from unutilized loading space. More than 50% of trucks around the world are run- ning empty or partially empty. It is a waste of fuel, manpower, air pollution and road congestion. The damage is estimated at €160B in Europe alone. Quicargo’s vision is to improve efficiency and increase overall profit in the global freight industry. Country: Israel Team: 5 7

Smart Engagement & Connected Experience New technologies also change the way we engage and connect with digital and physical experiences. For example, the physical store is still an essential part of the overall retail experience – but it must be connected to a company’s entire offering across multiple channels. Retail has entered an environment in which multiple channels operate as a touch point for the connected brand experience. The solu- tion is to use digital technology to engage with users in a smarter way, taking the best of the online and offline worlds to offer something new, innovative, and excit- ing. For businesses to truly adopt a connected experience, there is more than just a deep understanding required. The Future of Engagement includes an immersive experience for the end-user. Virgla is building the next generation of context aware, mobile content distribution and CRM plat- form. Connecting customers with their favorite brands. Virgla brings together users with brands at the time or location of relevance, creating a more personal- ized experience. The platform brings context to content by employing print recognition, sound recognition, ibeacons, and gamification. Country: Czech Republic Team: 7 MyStay is a Hotel Communication System, which provides a top class and tailor made for Hotel Guests via the MyAdmin system. MyStay creates applications for hotels which is installed on guests smartphones and used by them before, during and after their stay in hotel as a virtu- al hotel assistant. In addition, Hotel managers can administrate their hotel APP to quickly update con- tent, make special offers and analyze data from guests behavior. Country: Czech Republic Team: 11 8

Smart Working The digital revolution is reshaping the way we live our lives and the way we work. As business strategies undergo fundamental changes, so must organisations’ take in talent. A wholesale re-design of work is now required. Success in the digital world demands new ways of thinking, especially when it comes to talent. Workers with the most in-demand skills are creating a ‘gig economy’, where they’re in con- trol of where and when they work. Organisations, in turn, are rethinking their talent mix and exploring the potential of talent-driven organisations. This will enable organisations create value within the hyper-connected world. Nuklius is a talent-mapping platform which facili- tates knowledge transfer across organisations by simplifying the way employees find colleagues and expertise. Opportunity for Engagement In a time of hyper-connectivity and great change, it is essential to under- stand the changing world – how value is going to get created and what you need to do to win. At the broadest level, new technologies and disruptive innovating are changing the way businesses, gov- ernments, and society operate. Organizations need to understand how technology can improve their business and the customer experience, and plan for things that seem a distant dream. Whatever disruptive innovations are ahead, it’s the ecosystem – in which you are embedded - that will make the difference between eventual success and failure. In this particular time, it is more important than ever to understand what is going on by connecting with a broader network of partners.
