212 Personal Content Experience: Managing Digital Life in the Mobile Age Figure 6-2. Nokia N93 multimedia computer with a high-quality video recorder (Photo: Courtesy of Tero Hakala). Nokia N93, a multimedia mobile computer with nearly DVD-quality video capturing capability (Figure 6-2). What is different about mobile phone video capture compared to stand-alone video cameras is the intended use of the clips. The purpose may not be to produce a clip that will be shown to distant cousins or occasional visitors, but rather to store the event for future personal reference, to send out a proof of an extraordinary incident to a friend, or just to experiment – “since the camera happens to be there.” Fur- thermore, mobile video cameras are also used to enhance social pres- ence, and to facilitate group dynamics. A remarkable current trend related to video content is the increasing interest towards video publishing and sharing. For more discussion on this emerging topic, refer to section 7.3. An interesting subgenre in mobile videos is mobile micromovies. As the term suggests, this is a very short movie clip. Hannu Nieminen of Nokia characterized micromovies as follows, in a workshop in 5 Tampere Film Festival, 2002: • a new viewing situation • free distribution, and • grass-root level participation. 5 http://www.uta.fi /festnews/fn2002/eng/wed/microeng.html
