66 Personal Content Experience: Managing Digital Life in the Mobile Age 8 Mobile presence not only conveys your availability, but also your location. This information was not needed when working on a station- ary PC. Ring tones are a good example of new uses for existing content types. Music fi les have obviously existed prior to the mobile age, yet downloading simple melodies or snippets of songs for use as an incom- 9 ing call indicator has revealed a novel content type. A mobile device is usually very personal and close to our body. Information that many mobile devices may potentially collect is data related to our health and physical condition, such as heart rate. It does not usually make much sense to continuously monitor the heart rate while sitting on a desktop computer, whereas when mobile, it is often desired. An interesting yet not obvious newly-derived content type is a per- sonal dictionary. Everyone knows the pain of writing any text with the mobile phone’s keypad. However, T9 text entry system has brought 10 some help by applying language-dependent word prediction. However, the dictionary that is used to predict the word is not perfect: different users have different preferences, many domain-specifi c words are missing, not to speak of all the cool phrases used by the youth and different subcultures. Therefore, the ability to augment the dictionary with user’s own words is an essential feature. And the words added in the dictionary are extremely personal in content, even though usually accessible only indirectly while typing a message. 3.4.5 New Behavioural Patterns Besides new uses related to content types, new ways to deal with content have and will emerge. A typical behavioural factor is related to content creation. Being able to create content while on the move not only contributes to the enormous content growth rate, but also makes users create content on a more relaxed and spontaneous basis. This, in turn, results in storing information that might have otherwise never been captured and retained. One could claim that mobile cre- ation and access is to personal content what writing once was for 8 An example of mobile presence attributes is provided by Wireless Village initiative that is part of Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). See: http://www.openmobilealliance. org/tech/affi liates/wv/wv_pa_v1.0.pdf 9 One could argue that in the PC world, song snippets have been assigned to events in a similar fashion for more than a decade. Compared to the whole business models built around selling ring tones, however, it is a minor issue. 10 http://www.t9.com/
