One research project particularly targeting mobile multiplayer games 27 is the Multi-User Publishing Environment (MUPE) (Suomela et al. 2004), developed in the Nokia Research Centre and provided for developers under Nokia Open Source License (NOKOS 1.0a). MUPE is an application platform for mobile multi-user context- aware services, allowing anyone to create their own mobile services, games, and applications. To achieve these goals, MUPE uses a plethora of technologies to reduce the complexity of developing mobile services in client and server sides. From an end-user perspective, MUPE is a collection of services, and a service browser. Users can browse with MUPE client for new services, connect to them, and create persistent user accounts. After this, they can use many online services, such as games, messengers, and so forth. A single MUPE client installation is enough for all functionality, since once installed, MUPE updates itself as necessary. MUPE is used in two ways. The services are used by installing the MUPE client, and the services are hosted, and developed, by installing the back-end packages. 27 http://www.mupe.net/
