96 You Have a Book in You Obviously, as a writer, you want to become a lifelong reader, student, and learner. But that’s only the begin- ning. Once you’ve become an expert, you can imme- diately make the world aware of that fact. You can join website groups, contribute to blogs, or start a website or a blog of your own. It behooves you to immediately identify and com- municate with the greatest authorities in the 昀椀eld you’ve chosen. Every 昀椀eld has lots of people in it, but only ten, at the most, are the reigning greats. Contact them by mail, email, or in person. Most people will generously help a sincere and respectful newcomer. As you begin to establish these relationships, some- thing really amazing will happen. Instead of you seeking people out, people will start to seek you out. You’ll start getting emails and text messages asking for your opinion, and you may even be asked to appear at live events. When that happens, you’re going to be able to sell plenty of books! I commenced my speaking career training and talking every day in the life insurance business. I lis- tened to every audio done by the Million Dollar Round Table, General Agents and Managers Association, and every one of the companies that I worked for. I listened and took notes at every life insurance convention. I met and befriended all the greats and the company leaders.
