harrisville is the central village in town, and the preservation that’s taken place there has earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The trailblazer for this was Austin T. levy, a textile industrialist and pioneer of paid vacations and profit sharing with workers. Back in the 1930s he funded a coordinated village beautification campaign to create a model American town, and you can still see this work today. WELCOME TO centRal Falls With a population of over 22,000 people and an area of just 1.29 square miles, Central Falls is one of the most densely-populated cities in the country. The majority of the first settlers to this area were quakers. Following that, a diverse immigrant population of Scottish, Irish, French-Canadian, Polish and Portuguese to today’s primarily Hispanic community call this place home. With this, a plethora of flavors arrived making Central Falls a mecca for foodies. The city has dozens of authentic restaurants for you to choose from, including La paisa (Colombian), beirão (Portuguese), El paso (mexican), and goodfellas Tavern (Caribbean) only to name just a few. There are also many bakeries that line the main passages of dexter Street and Broad Street across this pedestrian- friendly city. At one end of Broad Street is Central Falls Landing - a destination situated along the Blackstone River that’s full of activity and al fresco dining. The landing, as it’s referred to, boasts shark’s peruvian Cuisine and royal Fried Chicken; as well as Explorer river Tours, overnight stays on the samuel slater canal boat, and kayak and canoe rentals to get out and explore this intriguing heritage river. In the late 1700s the town was interestingly enough known El Paso Restaurant as “Chocolateville” because the smell of roasting cacao beans from the William Wheat Chocolate mill spread throughout the area. This mill was one of America’s earliest water-powered chocolate manufacturing facilities, and it used the “middle” dam in the area for power, hence the renaming to Central Falls in the 1820s. On the site of the mill today, you can visit the Chocolate Mill Overlook park to enjoy the flow of the mighty Blackstone River and the natural surroundings that include cherry trees, RI’s largest cottonwood tree, steps to the water’s edge to view the beautiful historic stone bridge, Blackstone River kayak & Canoe Expeditions and interpretive panels that tell the story of early-American chocolate. Not too far from the vineyards is diamond hill park, one of Cumberland’s true gems. This former ski area is now renowned for downhill mountain biking and sledding. Mercy Woods preserve is just around the corner from here and a wonderful place to hike. Interestingly enough, combined with Cumberland’s other nature destination, The Monastery, you can find over 1,000 Blackstone River Theatre plant, animal, insect, and bird species! Another thing you may not know is Cumberland is the unofficial ice cream capital of Blackstone Valley. We say this because almost half of the numerous ice cream shops you can find around our region are right here in Cumberland. A fun fact for mineral enthusiasts is that Cumberland has the only large deposit of a rare iron-rich mineral. “Cumberlandite,” as it’s known, is the state rock of Rhode Island. WELCOME TO east PRoVIDence East Providence is a city rooted in culture. This area is part of the ancestral seat of the Pokanoket Nation called Sowams (the South Country) and the first settlement of Roger Williams in the Phillipsdale section at Omega Pond along the Seekonk River. The historic 1895 Looff Carousel is all that remains of the famous Crescent park amusement park in Riverside, once promoted as "The Coney Island of New England." The restored carousel is open to the public from spring through fall and still provides an opportunity to catch the brass ring. Plus, the array of celebrated historic sites and unique annual events are ones you should not miss. Antiquing is synonymous with glocester. The quaint village of Chepachet is one of the first villages in Rhode Island to be placed on the National Historic Register. This small shop is full of flavor including their popular Rhode Island red pizza strips (also known as party pizza or bakery pizza), plus calzones, hot slices and more. If you’re looking for a sitdown meal and possibly a scare, stop by Tavern on Main. Originally built in the early 1700s, this building has had several uses over the years. Today it’s a well-known family restaurant and it’s thought to be haunted. Stop in during your visit for some of their seafood and pasta specialties. Exploring outside this hub of shopping and dining, you’ll find more than a dozen hiking sites managed by the glocester Land Trust as well as the george Washington Management area and pulaski state park. Jaswell’s Farm is the oldest operating orchard in Smithfield. Following an afternoon of picking your own apples or pumpkins, you have to try their fresh made pies, bakery items and apple cider donuts! appleland Orchard is also a popular spot that offers many different apple varieties, plus a farmstand with cider, sweet treats, and even their own line of apple wine. you can easily spend the day meandering around the area’s country roads looking for autumnal foliage and stop by any number of farms and roadside stands. In addition to these beloved orchards, Smithfield is home to the headquarters of the audubon society of rhode island. They manage powder Mill Ledges, a 100-acre wildlife refuge that’s ideal for birding with miles of easy/moderate trails. Pastryland Bakery Mowry Conservation area is a great place to bring kids due to the easy trails and picnic area you’ll find here, plus a very interesting rock outcropping. But if you’re looking for more of a challenge, Wolf hill Forest preserve will get some elevation into your legs, especially if you make it to Mercer Overlook for views of the Providence skyline on clear days. If you find yourself in the area on a different day, you can still stroll the property that sits near the scenic georgiaville pond. If you’re into collegiate sports, the prestigious bryant university has its campus here so check their schedule to catch some division I action. And don't worry about the time you spend in town, as there are several hotel options perfect for any budget right nearby.
